I haven’t seen the movie adaption to Simon vs. The Homosapien Agenda. I rated this book 5/5 stars in 2015, but have never gone back to it. Last year, I read Alberti’s new book, The Upside to Unrequited. Now that was amazing. I also rated it 5/5 stars, but it certainly left a greater impact on me (click here to read my raving review). I’m sure if I reread Simon nowadays, I’d either absolutely adore it, or hate it (because my standards for Alberti’s writing are higher). But none of this explains why I haven’t seen the movie, Love, Simon, even though it’s reached a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes!
The main reason that I haven’t seen it is due to the hype. EVERYBODY on Twitter has gone crazy over this movie– more than the legacy of the book.
watching love, Simon and this does NOT live up to the hype at all

i watched love simon yesterday it was cute but i don’t really get the hype

I am afraid to be disappointed by a book that I have rated 5/5 stars. But I’m also afraid of “missing out” on the fun around the movie.
it probably sounds so dumb but everyday i think abt how i wish i could’ve seen “love, simon” when it was playing in the movie theater & how badly i wanted 2 experience the movie with a bunch of other people who might’ve been experiencing the same feelings i was at the time

I’m only 13 mins in but I’ll let you know.
Love Simon was good. Not as good as the hype made out but I’ll still support it 🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️

I’m also afraid most of this movie is going to be queer-bait, just like any other “ambiguous” teen in a romance movie/show.
the hype for love simon died awhile and the straights are just now talking about it pic.twitter.com/NfpcjCXxWV

A summary of the hype and queer-baiting.
Here are some other things that have annoyed me:
(anyway, i’m hype for both The Hate U Give and The Darkest Minds. i also loved Love, Simon and Everything, Everything despite sharing the same actor. i just want to see faces that aren’t nick robinson, katherine langford, and amandla stenberg.)

I am so sick of seeing the same few faces as the token YA characters (but keep in mind it’s still great that there’s representation):

i miss the love, simon hype so i put the love, back in my name

NoooOOOoOOO. It was getting pretty irritating seeing all the names starting with “Love”. It just didn’t seem so cutesy after the millionth appearance on Twitter.
the love, simon hype died literally 2 weeks after its release y’all hate fags that much? 😔

I don’t know where to begin with this tweet.
Perhaps I need to reread Simon to feel more confident in the story, so that my future self won’t associate the bad memories of a movie adaption.
At the end of the day, I’m just whining. This isn’t a dilemma. I might watch the movie and write a piece comparing the mediums.
What were your thoughts on Love, Simon? Did you like it more than the novel?
I recommend watching Beautifully Bookish Bethany’s comparison of the book to the movie:

I haven’t seen the movie yet. I’m waiting for it to come to one of the TV channels I’m subscribed to. I loved the book enough that I hope the movie is really good.

I watched it in the theater and absolutely loved it! I thought it stayed true to the heart of the book, but it did leave out, or not pay as much attention to, parts of the book I liked, such as the Oreo obsession and Leah being overweight. I’m also tired of seeing Amandla Stenberg, Nick Robinson, and Katherine Langford on every single YA adaption out there.
