The Australian Reading Hour

The Australian Reading Hour is an important annual campaign encouraging Australians of all ages to read. The premise is simple – pick up a book at any time of the day or night and read for an hour.  The 2017 campaign promises to be bigger and better, by building on the success of previous years. Run by ALIA’s Australian Public Library Alliance between 2012 and 2016; 2017’s Australian Reading Hour is supported by the Australian Library and Information Association, the Australian Society of Authors, the Australian Publishers Association, the Australian Booksellers Association, and the Copyright Agency Cultural Fund.

Children who know adults who read

On Thursday 14 September, thousands of Australians will be taking time out to read for an hour. They might do it on their own, with family and friends, or take part in one of the hundreds of events in libraries and bookshops across Australia. And they will be joined by a host of celebrities, including household name authors and many of our politicians.

I’ve added it to the agenda; have you?

My local library, Central Coast Libraries, runs reading-related activities all year round, including Book Clubs, children’s storytime, and meet the author events , but the Australian Reading Hour is the one event that everyone can take part in. It’s for all ages and all interests, and you can do it at any time of the day or night. If you can’t join in, go visit your local library or bookshop, and borrow/buy a book to take home with you for later. You guys should spread the word to your local libraries, so they could possibly promote the occasion!

Reading a gripping novel causes positive biological changes in the brain that can last for days. When tested for empathy, readers of narrative fiction achieved significantly higher scores than other groups. The more leisure books people read, the more literate they become and the more prosperous and equitable the society they inhabit.Reading reduces stress by 68%, relieving stress more quickly than listening to music, going for a walk or having a cup of tea.Reading is closely linked to increasing our understanding of our own identities.

Even though many of you guys are not Australian, I think this is a great step for all of the community. If you’re not Aussie; feel free to join in as well! Encourage all to read, even just for an hour. No distractions, just pure bliss!
